Hello there! I’m Andrea, a narrative designer and writer.

As a kid I wanted to be Jim Hawkins, Batman, a Jedi, a DigiDestined… When I grew up, the only thing left was to write stories.

I build stories, characters and worlds across media. I trained as a comic book writer and screenwriter before coming to games as a narrative designer. I started with audiogames, fully accessible to blind and visually impaired players, and then moved on to videogames.

My work doesn’t stop at the documents. I work directly in the engine and with in-house tools, I team up with programmers on the narrative tools a project needs, and I work closely with level designers on environmental storytelling. As a project manager I have also supported directors and producers, so I’m used to talking with every department and keeping the work focused on the tasks that matter. I also pitch projects: A Western Drama won the Incredibol call, and I have presented Nocturama Bononia at industry events in Bologna and Hell Galaxy at Comicon Napoli.

What I enjoy most about this job is the teamwork. I don’t write alone in a room: I like being changed by people who know things I don’t, and finding creative ways around the obstacles of a long project.

How I think

A story that fits the game.

I give games a story that fits them: shaped by gameplay, platform and production, and delivered through every channel the player meets. I can follow that story through every stage, from the pitch and the story outline to cutscene scripts, quests, dialogue and the narrative design inside the game.

Know the gameIts gameplay, its platform, its production, and what the director needs from the story.
Weave story and play togetherWorldbuilding, characters, quests, dialogue and environments woven into what the player does, together with game and level designers.
Keep what serves the experienceIdeas that do not fit the game are dropped early, so the ones that stay can carry the story.
Build a world that can growA world that serves the game first, and is solid enough to become an IP: more games, short stories and other narrative products set in it, and the writing that presents it to players.
